• Classic cars you can buy today as converted EVs

Well, maybe not _today_. Often the lead time for conversion is months. But it's still cool to zip away from the stop sign in a silent burnout. The common thread tying all these cars together is their hair-raising retail price - $70K and up, way up. But, costs may come down as more old, cool cars become viable for conversion.

  • Zelectric Built-to-order VW Beetle (Bug) conversions

    More info @ zelectricmotors.com
These folks kind of kicked off the beyond-hobbyist-level idea of commercial conversions. The old-school Beetle is a perfect candidate for conversion - mechanically simple, desirably styled, and a head-turning icon when cleaned up very very nicely. BYOB, or choose from their occasionally on-hand inventory. ~$70K and up (woof!)

  • Jaguar E Type Zero

    More info @ jaguar.com
Fully reversible conversion of an iconic British classic, done by the automaker itself. Yes, it's as pricey as you might think it is (think $200K+), but if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle can drive away from their wedding reception in one, I daresay for the rest of us that this is cheaply bought nobility. Fun fact: Rimac Automobili, a Croatian EV OEM, designed and manufactured the powertrain "cassette" that powers this car. They're the stealth tech partner the industry rarely talks about.

  • ICON4x4 Derelict - EV edition

    More info @ icon4x4.com
Not cheap – but you'll find that's a running theme with well thought-out conversions. Another one in the $250K+ category. LA custom vehicle powerhouse ICON is dabbling in EV conversions now (they've made a name with LandCruiser and Ford Bronco I gas restomods for over a decade). Specifically, old cars with patina and character are the subject, like this '49 Merc coupe. Jonathan Ward, CEO & chief designer, says he believes half of his total production run (a few vehicles each month) could be EV conversions in five years.

  • Swindon E Classic Mini

    More info @ swind.life
Closer to "affordable" (starting around $100K), British coachmaker Swindon is offering the classic British Mini as a peppy-but-not-power-mad conversion. Starting with an original Mini chassis and body, they update all the details and add some 20th century features (Satnav/streaming audio, power windows, AC, and sunroof). This seems like a sure winner for European city's tight streets and increasingly restrictive petrol car access laws.

  • Voitures extravert quintezza TE (electric Porsche 911)

    More info @ voitures-extravert.com
The Singer of electric 911 restomods. I don't doubt Singer themselves will try this eventually. You will pay a very Singer-esque €299.990 for your copy. Expected to ship in late 2019 / early 2020. Dutch. Very, very Dutch.
